My Experience With VoIP
VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) has been around long enough that almost everyone has heard of it by now. However, I 5A8have found that most people don't know what it is or what it can do for them. This month's newsletter gives a brief description of the service and details my own experience with it.
Basically, how VoIP works is that it takes an analog call and converts it to a digital signal that can be sent over the world wide web. During this conversion, the analog call is broken into "packets" and sent out separately over the Internet. A very similar process is how cell phone calls are transmitted from phone to tower to tower to phone. The trick is to have the packets reassembled in the same order that they were taken apart in. If they don't get put back together right you will hear the "can you.....hear.....me....now" jumbled calls that you sometime get on your cell phone.
As I mentioned in the introduction, I personally use VoIP at my home over my cable Internet service. I found a great provider at www.lingo.com. Here are some practical things that I discovered with my VoIP service:
1) Make sure the provider you select has local numbers for your area
2) Make sure you only have to dial 7 digits for a local call
(some providers make you dial your own area code even when
your calling somebody locally)
3) The rates for VoIP vary from $10 per month to $50 per month for
residential service. Find the one right for you. lingo.com fit
my needs because it is only $20 per mont5A8h and my wife can call
her friends and relatives in Western Europe for free!
4) If your return on investment by purchasing VoIP is due to
international calls, make sure the provider you select gives
you free long distance services for the specific countries
that you plan on calling. I've seen some friends make this error
and they end up paying the same amount as when they had normal
land-line service.
5) If you have DSL service you will NOT be able to disconnect your
phone line when you purchase VoIP service. Your phone line
carries your Internet signal over it's service. Some DSL
carriers allow you to not have dial-tone over your phone line
and just have DSL (called "naked DSL"). Bell South does not offer
"naked DSL" service so beware.
6) I have found that the quality of service is not as good as a
"land-line". Having said that, the voice quality is not horrible
either. I would equate it to being better than a cell-phone
quality of service.
7) Home or business security systems are not designed to work over
VoIP. I use ADT at my home, and they installed a wireless kits
throughout the house that work just fine. Don't make the mistake
of turning off your land-line if you have a security system until
you've taken care of this.
8) Installation was easy, I don't want this turn into a
test5A8imonial for lingo.com, but they did make it very easy. If
you have any problems just email me, and I'll be happy to walk you
through it.
9) The really cool thing that I have found with VoIP service
(especially from lingo.com) is that you can make changes to your
service from their website directly. For example, if you wanted to
setup a voice mail account, you can do it from your computer. Same
things goes for all
the normal features: caller ID, call block, etc. 10) You don't have to go buy a new phone when purchasing VoIP service. 11) If you are a business owner be careful about jumping into
VoIP with a carrier. There are some great phone systems out
there that provide VoIP for companies with several locations.
However, VoIP has problems with "hunt" or "roll-over" groups,
and other important business applications. You defiantly want
to get help if go that route for your business. 12) Most importantly, before I started using VoIP I was paying
around $50 per month for a phone line; $20 for long distance;
and $40 per month for Internet service. Total: $110 per month.
I now pay $60 per month for all 3 services! That's $600
per year I have saved!
